Femme Couture’s Red Caviar

Friday, 24 December, 2010

In the bottle, I honestly thought this would be another sister to OPI’s Tease-y Does It or Nubar’s Raspberry Truffle.

Color me 85 shades of wrong…but I don’t mind. How did I discover I was wrong? Why, I did a cray cray comparison, of course! See below for my insanity.

Formula was good – it dried quickly and was opaque in 2 coats despite my heavy handed tendencies.

So I left out OPI on the picture, but it’s there. FYI: Middle Finger = Nubar’s Raspberry Truffle, Ring Finger = OPI’s Tease-y Does It and Pointer and Pinkie finger = Femme Couture’s Red Caviar. RC has a very pretty subtle shimmer you can’t really see and it barely hints at a shimmer on my pointer finger.

Ah, now you can see the shimmer in the pointer finger, but it’s still incredibly subtle, isn’t it? RT and TDI are practically dupes! Just a reminder: Middle Finger = Nubar’s Raspberry Truffle, Ring Finger = OPI’s Tease-y Does It and Pointer and Pinkie finger = Femme Couture’s Red Caviar.

This Friday Red post is a lot more subdued than the others I’ve done, that’s for sure.

Chanel – Black Pearl and Pearl Drop

Thursday, 23 December, 2010

Part of Chanel’s 2011 Spring Collection, Collection Les Perles De Chanel, Black Pearl and Pearl Drop, are the 2 colors that made me go, “Hmm…it will either fail or sink.”

To be honest, after the epic gorgeousness that was Fall’s Paradoxal, I was severely let down by Riva. It felt so common. I had honestly seen it before – both with and without shimmer. I could wax bitterly lyrical about how disappointed I was by Riva, by not only by the color but the application as well. Rather than rehash, check out the post.

I’m in the middle of road for Black Pearl and Pearl drop. While both had fairly good application with the formula being a bit on the thin side, I once again felt that this was something I had already seen.

What Chanel tried to do was make a cute little tips and toes set – I was told that Pearl Drop was meant for your fingers and Black Pearl was meant for your toes. Wear it at a resort, blah blah blah. You get the idea. Anyway, picture spam below!

Last note: I wanted to compare the nail polish against the real thing – a black pearl. Obligatory shot included.

What Chanel did here was capture the iridescence you would find in a black pearl. It’s a hard sheen to capture because it has so many colors – green, grey, gold and a multitude of other colors depending on the lustre of the pearl and the type/kind. Don’t worry, there won’t be much jewelry or gemstone chatter from me in this post…I think.

When I saw this in sunlight, it really reminded me of my mother’s Tahitian Black Pearls that she has. She busts out with them once every NEVER because she can’t be bothered with getting them out of the bank. I saw them ONCE when I graduated from college, but that was it. I remember I was struck by the sheer size of the pearls as well as the lustre and the color. When I say size, you have to understand that the average pearls you see in the store are small – roughly 7 to 7.7 mm. Her Tahitian Black Pearls are a crazy 13-15mm in size. Practically double the average size of a pearl. Ok, I’m done. Sort of. I swear I’m done with jewelry chatter.

I didn’t lie – I had to provide picture of Chanel’s Black Pearl nail polish vs the color of a real black pearl. 😀

There is a faint gold shimmer that only comes out in person. It barely registers here. What Chanel tried to do was mimic the peachy golden glow of white pearls. They did a pretty good job. While this color wasn’t bad, not sure if I’d wear it faithfully.

You can see the shimmer better here.

Overall not a bad collection, but just not enough to wow me. Sorry, Chanel. If I had to give this a grade, I’d say this is a C for colors and an A for the formula.

Femme Couture – Shimmer Time

Friday, 17 December, 2010

I feel like crap. I have been feeling like this for the past 4 days. The past week of denial has finally caught up. “No, I’m not sick. It’s the sudden change in weather.” (that is true, though – when weather changes on me frequently I find myself feeling under the weather..no pun intended!)

I finally succumbed to the sickness on Monday. I told myself it was because I was exhausted and I needed sleep…and I slept. And slept. I crawled out of bed on Tuesday to get the things I needed to do done, like drive hubby to the train station and feed Rex Rex and kitty. I crawled out of bed on Wednesday to repeat Tuesday’s mistake. Thursday, I couldn’t even budge. I was in pain. Joints are aching.

Today is marginally better…better enough so that I can actually do my Friday Red Post and then crawl back under the covers for more sleep that is interrupted by this terrible cough.

If you see typos, don’t be a hater – keep in mind I’m sick and I’m not even going back to read what I’ve written.

Formula dried quickly and was opaque in 2 coats. A bit disappointed in this because the shimmer that was mega prevalent in the bottle barely showed at all on the nail.

Green, green and more green! It’s a green season.

Sorry no sunlight shots…it was overcast 99.9% of the day so the best I could get was the overcast ones. I shall heave one big dramatic sigh…but hey, I’d rather have overcast than totally rainy days or snow.

This is a very pretty shimmer and it’s a dark green. It vaguely reminded me of China Glaze’s Emerald Sparkle…but this isn’t as vibrant or as striking. Sorry, Femme Couture.

Your formula rocked it, though. Two coats and quick drying. I’ll give ya that!

Just a reminder – to see the biggest version available, click on the image(s) below and then click on the number in the Full Size is 3456 x 1983. Then when the huge image shows up, your cursor will turn into a magnifying glass with a + in it…click on the image with the magnifying glass and then BAM! Full size right there. OPI – Diva of Geneva

OPI Diva of Geneva

OPI Diva of Geneva is part of their Fall 2010 Swiss Collection. I know I’m a bit late in getting this out, but when I had seen the promo pics, I got excited. So excited I was that I kept calling my nail guys here. I was begging, pleading, whining to know when/if they got it and have them call me so I can get there and buy it ASAP.

Well, they did as they promised and called me. However, once I had them in my possession, I was not impressed. I was so unimpressed that I put them in the back of my OPI drawer. Yea. Out of sight, out of mind and all that. However, it sat at the back of my mind for ages and I finally thought…”why not?”

So here it is. OPI Diva of Geneva is a pretty color – don’t get me wrong. It’s got some nice flashes to it and that makes it somewhat redeemable, but it’s not me. Sorry, OPI. Your final solo fall collection didn’t wow me the way your France collection just a few scant years ago.

Formula was ok. Nothing really stood out. I guess that means it dried in a decent amount of time and didn’t annoy me.

OPI Diva of Geneva

Please excuse the big old chip on my middle finger. I had been wearing this color for a few days just to see how it would hold up. It wasn’t too bad. 🙂

Chanel – Riva

I was surprised with this color. Hubby got it for me and who am I to say no to a bottle of nail polish? 😀

I was happy to get a color like this. I had been in two minds and I couldn’t make it up – do I want it or don’t I want it? Then I got a confirmation email saying it was on the way…decision taken out of my hands.

However, had I known then what I do now, I’d have said, “Let me find a dupe and pass.” I’d have used the money towards purchasing some other polish.

First off, what a craptastic formula. Streaky and a total pain to work with. Not opaque after 3 coats. Took forever and a *beeep* day to dry. I wasn’t even going to try and do 4 coats because even after the first coat, I had BUBBLES. BUBBLES IN A FIRST COAT THAT WASN’T EVEN THICK. I’m beyond disappointed.

And Chanel had a gorgeous shimmer that was prevalent in the bottle…and barely noticeable in sunlight.

Skip this. Get something like OPI’s What’s With The Cattitude or Finger Paints’ Blissfully Blue and then slap some CND Nail Effect Sparkle on it.

Ok, I think you get how disappointed I am by this polish. On to the pictures. As always, keep clicking the image until you can click it no more and it is huge. Remember, these are just thumbnails. The overall details will be seen in the original size of the picture (ghetto hangnails and all!) – you will see the shimmer in the sunlight shot and the bubbles.

China Glaze – Peace on Earth vs NARS – Mash

Tuesday, 16 November, 2010

When I saw these greens separately, I thought, “Could one be a dupe for the other?” Well, let me just test it out!

While both formulas were excellent – quick drying and opaque in two thin coats, there was a world of difference between the colors themselves. See below for the comparison.

As always, click the thumbnails until they become huge.

Mash is more on the green side while POE has more yellow in it. Both were flattering on my skin, despite the warm undertone. Yay! Please excuse the big old chip on my pinkie finger. I had been wearing the color for a week and then remembered to take a picture.

Sunlight couldn’t really bring any real depth to the shade shot, but you can still see the difference.

OPI – Yodel Me On My Cell

Pretty, pretty blue….how I do love you.

Please excuse the VNL – I tried a new technique on application and it failed me. I’ll try it again later, but if it keeps failing me I’ll go back to how I used to apply.

This formula was thin and a bit moody. I had to do 3 coats to get it to look this color, but you can still see nail line. Grr. It dried quickly, that was one of the saving graces…oh, and the brush wasn’t jacked up, either. YAY!

I’ve heard this shade described as an aqua blue, but it doesn’t really remind me of any kind of aqua nor does it remotely remind me of the sea. I kept thinking, “TEAL! Teal light.” However, the shimmer in this is just freaking fabulous. I mean, Rachel Zoe shut it down, I DIE kind of fabulous.

As always, keep clicking the thumbnails because the pictures get HUGE. These are merely thumbnails. The one downside to making the picture the original size is that you really see all the imperfections in my nails and in application. Oh well. That’s a risk I’m willing to take.

PS I’m still squeeing a little bit for my Giants! I’m TiVo’ing the parade and will watch with hubby when he gets home tonight…he took caltrain in to work and said the place was a MADHOUSE. Good thing I opted to drop him off at the Santa Clara Station, but even then, it was insane. I retweeted the picture and you can find it in my twitter feed in case you’re interested.
